You don’t have to be productive all the time.

When Your Body Has Other Plans
I think one of the hardest parts of living with a chronic illness is accepting that you can’t always keep up with the pace you think you should. There are days when you wake up with a long list of things you want to accomplish, and your body has a completely different plan. Maybe you’re exhausted after doing something that normally wouldn’t feel like a big deal, or you simply need more rest than the people around you. And even when you know you need to slow down, it can be so easy to feel guilty about it.
We live in a world that constantly tells us to hustle, work harder, and make the most of every day, so resting can almost feel like you’re doing something wrong.
Resting Doesn’t Mean You’re Falling Behind
Living with a chronic illness has taught me that being productive isn’t the only way to have a good day. My energy isn’t always predictable. Some days I feel great and want to do everything at once, while other days, getting through the basics feels like enough. That can be frustrating when you have goals, a career, hobbies, and a version of yourself you’re constantly trying to become.
But needing to rest doesn’t mean you’re lazy or falling behind. Sometimes your body is simply asking for something your mind has a hard time accepting: to slow down.
A Day Doesn’t Have to Be “Productive” to Count
We tend to put so much pressure on ourselves to make every day “count.” We want to work out, keep up with work, maintain friendships, take care of our homes, eat well, travel, and still somehow have time to relax. But a day doesn’t have to be packed with accomplishments to be meaningful. Sometimes a successful day is getting through your work, taking a walk, and then reading on the couch. Sometimes it’s watching TV in bed, ordering takeout, or doing absolutely nothing because that’s what your body needs. Those moments aren’t wasted. They are part of your life, too.
Giving Yourself a Little More Grace
I still have goals. I still want to grow, work hard, travel, have fun, and create a life I’m proud of. But I’m learning that I don’t have to do all of those things every single day to be moving forward.
If you also struggle with feeling guilty when you’re resting, I hope you can give yourself a little more grace. You are allowed to have slow days. You are allowed to listen to your body. Your life is so much more than your productivity, and you don’t have to accomplish something every day to prove that you’re doing enough.
You can still have your dream life, even with chronic illness! The path looks different for everyone.
